Pakistani actor Umer Aalam has come forward in support of Saba Qamar following a legal controversy over her wearing a police uniform in a recent drama. The drama, Serial Killer (2023), featured Qamar portraying Superintendent of Police Sarah Sikander, and she donned the Punjab Police uniform as part of her role with a valid no-objection certificate (NOC).
The controversy arose after behind-the-scenes videos and images of Saba in the uniform circulated online. Wasim Zawar filed a petition in a Lahore sessions court, claiming that no individual can legally wear a police uniform or display an SP badge without official permission. The petitioner argued that such acts could mislead the public and potentially harm the reputation of the Punjab Police, citing sections of the Pakistan Penal Code related to impersonation.
Responding to the petition, Saba Qamar defended her role on Instagram, emphasizing that characters are dressed according to their roles, not public imagination. She stated, “Were you expecting her to play a police officer in a bridal outfit or a lawn suit with a badge? Because last I checked, characters are dressed according to the role, not your imagination.”
Umer Aalam also addressed the controversy on social media, calling Saba Qamar a “pride of the industry” and urging the petitioner to withdraw the case. His statement highlighted the strong support Saba has received from fans and fellow actors, who have defended her professional choice to wear the uniform as part of the scripted role.
The Lahore Sessions Court, presided over by Additional Sessions Judge Ilyas Rehan, has adjourned the hearing until January 14, requesting comments from the police department regarding the petition. Meanwhile, public discourse continues, with social media users largely supporting Saba Qamar, praising her professionalism and asserting that wearing the uniform in a scripted drama does not constitute a legal violation.
