Renowned playback singer Shreya Ghoshal has openly condemned the practice of lip-syncing at live performances, labeling it a “lazy act” and emphasizing the value of hard work and authenticity for artists.
In a recent podcast with Raj Shamani, Shreya expressed, “That’s just a lazy act, you haven’t put in the hard work. In my personal opinion, it’s not a good approach.” She highlighted that while audiences may enjoy performances in any format, an artist should strive for excellence and feel uncomfortable if a live performance or recording fails to meet their own standards.
Shreya further added, “You have to work hard every single day. Either you earn that crown or throne, or don’t take it lightly thinking you’ve already achieved it,” reinforcing the importance of diligence and dedication in building a lasting career.
The remarks come amid ongoing criticism of performers lip-syncing during concerts. Recently, singer AP Dhillon faced backlash for lip-syncing his track With You on The Great Indian Kapil Show, sparking renewed debate about live performance ethics.
Shreya Ghoshal began her playback career at 16 with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas, earning her first National Award for Best Female Playback Singer for Bairi Piya. She has since sung in multiple languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam. Some of her popular tracks include Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai, Dheere Jalna, Yeh Ishq Hai, and the Bengali hit Pherari Mon from Antaheen. Her latest work includes Maatrubhumi from Battle of Galwan starring Salman Khan.
Beyond singing, Shreya is hosting Indian Idol Season 16 alongside Badshah and Vishal Dadlani. She has also announced her world tour, The Unstoppable, with scheduled performances across the UK, USA, Abu Dhabi, and India, promising fans a showcase of her live singing prowess.
